How do I Change the Ownership of my Domain Name?

What is a Registrant Name Change?
A registrant name change is the process of transferring the ownership of a domain name from one party to another. The new registrant will have to meet eligibility requirements in order to own the domain name.

Changing Ownership of .au Domain Names
Registrant name change rules for .au domain names
A registrant name change for a .au domain involves complete re-registration of the domain for 1 year under the receiving entity, overriding the previous domain registration license. The following requirements must be met to successfully complete a .au registrant name change:

  • Domain name must be currently registered with Melbourne IT DPS
  • Domain password must be provided
  • Current registrant contact email for the domain name is accessible. Perform a whois search if this is not known.
  • New registrant is eligible to own .au domain (valid ABN/ACN/TM/State Business number)
  • Payment details on the account must be valid

How to change ownership of a .au domain
To perform a change of ownership, please email [email protected] with the following information:

  • Domain name
  • Domain password
  • Account reference
  • New registrant name
  • New ABN/ACN/TM/State Business number
    Once confirmed, the domain ownership will be updated and payment will be deducted directly from your nominated billing method.

Changing Ownership of Other Domain Names
Registrant name change rules for gtld and cctld domain names
Generally, these domains do not involve any extension to the domain’s period of registration. The following requirements must be met to successfully complete a .au registrant name change:

  • Domain name must be currently registered with Melbourne IT DPS
  • Domain password must be provided
  • Current administrative contact email for the domain name is and accessible. Perform a whois search if this is not known.
  • Payment details on the account must be valid
  • There may be additional eligibility requirements for cctlds. Please email [email protected] to confirm these.

How to change ownership for a .gtld and cctld domain
To perform a change of ownership, please email [email protected] with the following information:

  • Domain name
  • Domain password
  • Account reference
  • New registrant name
  • Any additional eligibility requirements for cctlds
    Once confirmed, the domain ownership will be updated and the payment will be deducted directly from your nominated billing method.
