How do I upload and download files via FTP?

FTP short for File Transfer Protocol is a method of transferring files from one host to another. In most cases specifically the Web. It involves you uploading your site to Melbourne IT’s hosting servers. If you’re interested in the technicalities behind FTP have a look at the Wikipedia article.

How do I connect to FTP?

Firstly you will need a FTP client. Whilst there are many different FTP clients we recommend using FileZilla. It’s a free open source FTP client.

How do I download FileZilla?

  1. Head over to https://filezilla-project.org/
  2. Click on Download FileZilla Client
  3. Select ‘Download Now’
  4. You may need to click ‘Show additional download options’ to see versions of FileZilla for other operating systems.

How Do I Find my FTP Details?

Finding your FTP details is a tad different for cPanel & Cloud. Please follow the instructions pertaining to your hosting plan.

Cloud

  1. Log into your MyAccount
  2. Under Manage Services, click View Webhosting Services
  3. On the next page, click on the domain name’s Cloud Hosting product
  4. On the next page, click Manage Service
  5. Now you’re in The Console.
  6. In The Console click on Cloud Hosting
    If you scroll down you will see an area labelled FTP details. Below that your FTP account is displayed. You will need to click ‘Show’ next to your password to see it. In FileZilla for the Host field you can always use ftp.partnerconsole.net or alternatively you can also use ftp.your-domain.extension

After you have connected to your Cloud Service via FTP you can simply start uploading files.

cPanel

  1. Log into your MyAccount
  2. Under Manage Services, click View Webhosting Services
  3. On the next page, click on the domain name’s cPanel Hosting product
  4. On the next page, click Manage Service
  5. Now you’re inside The Console, select cPanel from the left hand navigational menu.
    Here you can see your cPanel server, FTP username & password. For FileZilla you can either use ftp.your-domain.extension or your cPanel Server address.
    Once you have connected navigate to the public_html folder. The public_html folder is the root directory for your website. Any document you upload here will be visible to the web.

Windows 2012 Cloud Hosting FTP details

  1. Log into your MyAccount
  2. Under Manage Services, click View Webhosting Services
  3. On the next page, click on the domain name’s Cloud Hosting product
  4. On the next page, click Manage Service
  5. Now you’re in The Console.
  6. In The Console click on Windows Hosting on the left hand option.
    If you scroll down you will see an area labelled FTP details. Below that your FTP account is displayed. You will need to click ‘Show’ next to your password to see it. In FileZilla for the Host field you will need to use the Hostname as bne3ftp01.server-web.com using Port 22 .

After you have connected to your Windows 2012 Hosting Service via FTP you can simply start uploading files.
