What is the difference with shared hosting and VPS?

Note: This article covers Melbourne IT DPS customers only.

In shared hosting resources such as CPU, memory and disk space are shared amongst all customers on the one server. It is the most economical solution for businesses however shared hosting has their limitations. The user will not have root access to the server and rely on the host provider to maintain and enhance the environment. Shared hosting is not recommended for mission critical websites.

A VPS is a virtulised server and mimics a dedicated server on a shared hosting environment. There is more flexibility for the user on a VPS as they can gain root access and install any software that runs on the OS. Essentially the VPS belongs only to the user.
